The Legacy of Ignorantism   By: (1857-1925)

Book cover

The Legacy of Ignorantism by T. H. Pardo de Tavera is a remarkably insightful exploration of the detrimental effects of ignorance on society and the power structures it perpetuates. Delving into various facets of Filipino society, the author skillfully dissects the pervasive ignorance that has plagued the nation for generations.

From the outset, Pardo de Tavera establishes a compelling argument, highlighting the destructive consequences of ignorance on the development and progress of a nation. Drawing on historical and contemporary examples, he elucidates how ignorance engenders a vicious cycle of poverty, political manipulation, and social stratification. Through thorough analysis, he exposes the mechanisms by which ignorance is harnessed as a tool of control by those in power, perpetuating their status quo at the expense of society's overall well-being.

One of the illuminating aspects of this book is Pardo de Tavera's examination of the education system. He underscores how the lack of quality education, coupled with the inherent apathy towards intellectual pursuits, cultivates and perpetuates ignorance among the masses. The author’s keen observations and well-researched evidence serve to awaken readers to the urgent need for educational reform and the pivotal role it plays in dismantling the shackles of ignorance.

Furthermore, Pardo de Tavera adeptly explores the impact of religious dogma on the perpetuation of ignorance. He argues that blind adherence to religious doctrine stifles critical thinking and curiosity, effectively discouraging individuals from seeking knowledge beyond accepted truths. This insightful analysis challenges readers to reevaluate the role of religion in society and its potential impact on progress.

Throughout the book, Pardo de Tavera skillfully weaves personal anecdotes, historical accounts, and sociopolitical analysis in an engaging manner. This multifaceted approach not only enhances the book's credibility but also keeps the reader thoroughly engrossed. The author’s prose is both accessible and thought-provoking, making complex ideas easily understood.

Despite these merits, there are a few instances where the book could have benefited from more in-depth exploration. Certain topics, such as the role of colonialism in the perpetuation of ignorance, are touched upon but not fully developed. Expanding on these subjects would have provided a richer understanding of the broader context within which ignorance thrives.

Overall, The Legacy of Ignorantism is a compelling and thought-provoking examination of the perils of ignorance within society. Pardo de Tavera’s meticulous analysis and engaging prose make this book essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the impact of ignorance on societal development and the urgent need for enlightenment.

By Dr. T. H. Pardo de Tavera

An address [2] delivered before the Teachers, Assembly, Baguio, April 23, 1920

Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge; ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered Luke 11:52.

I have the honor to appear before you accepting with great pleasure an invitation which the Assistant Director, Mr. Osias, kindly extended to me. Having left the choice of the subject to my discretion, I deemed it worth while to speak on the Lay Education which has been in operation in our public schools since the implantation of the new régime which rules the destiny of the Filipino people. I am going to confine myself to facts, and shall speak as frankly and as faithfully as the case requires, altho in so doing I may hurt the feelings of some... Continue reading book >>
