Aurinko paistoi helteisesti aholle, jossa eräs kahdentoista vuotias poika poimi marjoja tuohiseensa ja lauleli:

Kankaalle karjan, Mättäälle marjan Lamponen toi. Hei heli hoi!

Metsässä toimin, Marjoja poimin; Luoja ne loi, Köyhille soi,

Kypsimmät annan Poijes, ja kannan, Minnekkä vie Suorana tie.

Joku rapsahdus kuului, ja poika huusi:

Kuka siellä kuukuelee, kettuko vai jänis?

Oohoh, eikö suutarin Sakki miestä metsän elävästä erota?

Noh, kun olisikin ollut mies, mutta olipa pieni muona Matin Joju vain. Marjassako sinäkin olet?

Marjassa niin. Mutta ne ovat niin hemmetin raakoja vielä, eikä niille herroille pahuuksille raakilat kelpaa.

Hyi, Joju, kuinka tuolla tavalla kiroilet!

Mitä kiroilen? Enhän minä ole kironnut.

Olet hyvinkin, ja vieläpä kaksi kertaa.

Enhän minä ole pahan nimeä maininnut. En ole milloinkaan tuollaisia sanoja kiroukseksi kuullut sanottavan. Kylän miehet ja isäkin sanovat paljon rumemmin, kun kiroilevat.
