A Middy of the Slave Squadron A West African Story   By: (1851-1922)

Book cover

A Middy of the Slave Squadron by Harry Collingwood is a captivating West African story that takes the readers on a thrilling adventure across the Atlantic. Set in the mid-19th century, this historical novel immerses us in a time when the slave trade was at its height and explores the moral dilemmas faced by those involved.

The story follows the journey of Tom Upmore, a young British midshipman, as he joins the HMS Boscawen – a ship in the British Royal Navy tasked with intercepting slave ships and curbing the illicit trade. Collingwood's vivid descriptions instantly transport the reader to the shores of West Africa, where the narrative comes alive with vibrant landscapes and bustling coastal villages.

One of the strengths of Collingwood's writing is his ability to create well-rounded and relatable characters. Tom's development throughout the book is captivating, as we witness his initial naïveté transformed into a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding the slave trade. His internal struggle allows readers to reflect on the moral implications of the era, making the story not only entertaining but also thought-provoking.

The pacing of the novel is expertly managed, maintaining a constant sense of excitement and tension. From the heart-pounding chase scenes on the high seas to encounters with formidable adversaries, each chapter unfolds with a perfect balance of action and introspection. Collingwood's attention to detail in describing ship maneuvers and naval operations adds an authentic touch to the narrative, immersing the reader further into the story.

Furthermore, the narrative isn't limited to the perspective of the British crew. Collingwood introduces us to a diverse cast of characters from different backgrounds, including Africans who play key roles in the story. This inclusion allows for a more nuanced exploration of the West African experience during this dark period in history.

While the book primarily focuses on the adventures at sea, it also delves into themes of friendship, loyalty, and the struggle against injustice. Collingwood does not shy away from showcasing the harsh realities faced by slaves, shedding light on the inhumane treatment they endured. Through Tom's journey, we witness his gradual transition from a young officer following orders to a compassionate advocate for the abolition of slavery.

The only minor critique I have is that some descriptions and dialogues occasionally feel somewhat lengthy, causing the pacing to slow at times. However, this is a small drawback that does not significantly hamper the overall enjoyment of the story.

In conclusion, A Middy of the Slave Squadron by Harry Collingwood is a compelling historical adventure that takes readers on a voyage filled with suspense, moral dilemmas, and personal growth. Collingwood's ability to immerse us in the time and setting, combined with his well-developed characters and thought-provoking themes, make this book an engaging and memorable read. Anyone with an interest in maritime history and thought-provoking stories will find this novel thoroughly rewarding.

A Middy of the Slave Squadron A West African Story

By Harry Collingwood This was one of the last books written by "Harry Collingwood". The copy we worked from was very clearly printed, but with one very major problem the text was printed far too close to the centre of the book. Therefore the book could not be scanned using the regular book scanner, but rather it was done using the scanner in flat bed mode. However, the results were quite good, with the text coming through very clearly, and only the hyphens needing a good amount of checking. The hyphens get affected by the cleaning up process which takes out the unwanted dark patches on the scans.

The book is exactly according to the title. Remembering that "Harry Collingwood" was in real life a naval architect, you can take good note of the way he handles nautical terminology. Other contemporary authors were good, but in this respect Collingwood is a real master.

It makes a good audiobook, so you ought to enjoy it very greatly. NH. A MIDDY OF THE SLAVE SQUADRON A WEST AFRICAN STORY
