Gästgivarn i Sutre var några och femtio år då han tog sig hustru. Orsaken till dröjsmålet var den, att han som gästgivare råkat kvinnfolk av alla slag och i en punkt funnit dem alla lika som syskonbär. De höllo inte med rättvisan. Efter hans förmenande. Och orättvisa var gästgivarn i Sutre en styggelse.

Av samma orsak höll han sig icke med konjak, rom, arrack med flera tullpliktiga varor, ty han betraktade tullen som en orättmätig pålaga, den där en rättvis man icke borde underkasta sig. Hellre då lida den försmädelsen att höra granntyckta gäster klandra maten, lagad av en halvblind gumma, och den tarvliga drycken.

Men en dag kom till gästgivargården i Sutre en västgötaknalle, slog sig ned under eken med lådan sin och begärde konjak.

Har jag inte, svarade gästgivarn.

Varföre då, då? frågade knallen, som var en allvarlig ung man med svarta tattarögon och svart, stripigt hår.

För det ska fan och inte jag betala syndapengar, svarade gästgivarn och utlade sina åsikter om tullen.

Det finns väl tullfri konjak, invände knallen. På västkusten kan en tappa konjak ur gråberget, om en bara har rätta handlaget.
