The Old Die Rich   By: (1914-1996)

The Old Die Rich by H. L. Gold

In "The Old Die Rich" by H. L. Gold, readers are transported to a world where death no longer marks the end of a person's existence, but rather the beginning of a new chapter filled with unique opportunities. The story immerses readers in an imaginative and thought-provoking narrative that challenges our perceptions of life and mortality.

The book introduces us to a society where age is no longer a barrier to success. Instead, the elderly hold a position of privilege, as they possess invaluable knowledge and experiences that are highly sought after. Gold deftly explores the ramifications of such a system, inviting readers to ponder the implications of a world in which the old are celebrated rather than discarded.

Central to the plot is the enigmatic character of John Farrell, a man who has achieved immeasurable wealth and success, only to find himself rejuvenated back to his youthful self. As he grapples with the consequences of his revived youth, Farrell faces a moral dilemma: to relish in his newfound power and privilege or to use his influence to bring about change within this unbalanced society.

As the story unfolds, Gold masterfully weaves together elements of mystery, science fiction, and social commentary. Through vivid descriptions and clever dialogues, he creates a richly-textured world that feels both familiar and yet distinctly different. The author's attention to detail and his ability to capture the complexities of human emotions make the characters engaging and authentic.

One of the strengths of "The Old Die Rich" lies in Gold's ability to explore profound philosophical questions. Through the lens of this fictitious reality, he prompts readers to reflect on their own attitudes towards aging, societal structures, and the pursuit of wealth. The narrative not only entertains but also serves as a catalyst for self-reflection, leaving readers contemplating the choices and values presented in the story long after they have finished reading.

However, at times, the pacing of the novel can be slow, hindering the overall flow and impact of the story. Additionally, some readers may find certain plot developments predictable or lacking in surprise. Nevertheless, these minor drawbacks do not detract significantly from the overall enjoyment and thought-provoking nature of the novel.

In summary, "The Old Die Rich" is a captivating and intellectually stimulating read for those who enjoy exploring unconventional themes within the realms of science fiction and social commentary. H. L. Gold masterfully constructs a world where age and wealth intersect, inviting readers to reconsider their own beliefs and values. With its compelling narrative and thought-provoking questions, this book is sure to leave a lasting impression on any reader willing to embark on this unique journey.

THE OLD DIE RICH

It is the kind of news item you read at least a dozen times a year, wonder about briefly, and then promptly forget but the real story is the one that the reporters are unable to cover!

"You again, Weldon," the Medical Examiner said wearily.

I nodded pleasantly and looked around the shabby room with a feeling of hopeful eagerness. Maybe this time, I thought, I'd get the answer. I had the same sensation I always had in these places the quavery senile despair at being closed in a room with the single shaky chair, tottering bureau, dim bulb hanging from the ceiling, the flaking metal bed.

There was a woman on the bed, an old woman with white hair thin enough to show the tight drawn scalp, her face and body so emaciated that the flesh between the bones formed parchment pockets. The M.E. was going over her as if she were a side of beef that he had to put a federal grade stamp on, grumbling meanwhile about me and Sergeant Lou Pape, who had brought me here...
