Itse seisoi hän laivan kannella, nuori, kaunis, vaikka hiukan kalseahkon näköinen nainen vierellään, ja iloitsi jo edeltäkäsin siitä herkullisesta illallisesta, jonka hän nyt kuukauden kestäneen ulkomaa matkan jälkeen aikoi vaimonsa ja parhaan ystävänsä Soisalon seurassa syödä Luodolla tai Kappelissa.

Terve! Terve! huusi hän yli laivanlaidan ja viittasi iloisesti kädellään.

Hei! huusi toinen ja kiversi siroja, lyhyiksi leikattuja viiksiään. Kaunis matka?

Viimeinen kysymys oli Antin vaimolle tarkoitettu, kuten uudistettu, äskeistäkin vielä kunnioittavampi ja kohteliaampi hatunkohotus todisti. Rouva vastasi siihen vain ystävällisesti päätään nyykäyttelemällä.
