Isossa tuvassa Björnstad'issa istuivat vanhukset yksinänsä. Tuvassa oli pimeä; mutta Kari muori ei niin vähästä syystä tahtonut rukkiansa jättää. Hän siirsi sen vaan likemmäksi takkaa, josta valkea valaisi lankaa, ja siinä hän istui arvokkaana ja suorana, valkoinen huivi päässä; katseli välistä oliko häkkärä niinkuin olla piti, hieroi sormellaan rukin rintaa ja pani pyörän hyrisemään ja hurisemaan, että olisi voinut luulla koko mehiläisparven lentäneen tupaan. Ei hänelle juuri paljon valaistusta takasta tullut tällä kertaa; siinä oli ainoastaan muutamia punaisia hiiliä savuttamassa ja muutama puoleksi palanut oksa, joka hyvin ylpeästi leimahti, mutta samassa sammui, kun luultiin että siitä jotain tulisi maailmassa. Kari oli monta kertaa aikonut heittää pientä oksaa tuleen, mutta aikomus päättyi joka kerta siihen, että hän katsahti ovelle päin eikö Bergit jo tulisi.
