Au mois de septembre 1888, la Vie Parisienne , ce curieux journal d'observation et de raillerie, d'élégance mondaine et de philosophie profonde, l'image en un mot de Marcelin, ce dandy camarade de Taine, et que son esprit anime encore, publiait la lettre suivante, adressée à son directeur par le signataire de la présente préface:

«Je vous envoie, cher monsieur, le manuscrit que mon pauvre ami Claude Larcher m'a légué avec mission de vous l'offrir sous ce titre : Physiologie de l'Amour moderne ou Méditations de philosophie parisienne sur les rapports des sexes entre civilisés dans les années de grâce 188 .... Je ne sais si vous trouverez dans ces pages, d'ailleurs inachevées, la légèreté de main qu'il eût fallu. Quand il commença cette Physiologie, Claude suivait déjà cette carrière d'homme très malheureux en amour, qui est celle de quelques jeunes gens à Paris. Il avait, certes, d'excellentes raisons pour ne pas croire à la fidélité de sa maîtresse, cette Colette Rigaud qu'il a trop affichée pour que ce soit une indiscrétion de la nommer.
