Näillä Aunus ja Viroretkillänsä oli Risto oppinut venäjää, kuten hän itse kerskaili. Samoin kerskaili hän osaavansa ruotsiakin, jota oli oppinut Uudellamaalla ja eteläisellä Pohjanmaalla matkustellessaan. Risto oli reipas poika, häntä ei maailman murheet rasittaneet. 12 vuotiasna lähti hän kotoaan "kaupalle". Kun joku tiellä kulkija kysyi, mikä mies hän oli, vastasi Risto:

"Kauppias".

"Mitä sulla on kaupan?"

"Leipäsaksia".

"Vai niin, oho sinua, kauppias!"

Ken oli vielä uteliaampi ja kysyi: "mistä olet ja kenen poika?" niin sai vastauksen:

"Rytkölästä, Lassin poika".

"Kuinka vanha olet?"

"Nie snaju, mull' on kiire, hyvästi!" vastasi Risto.

Jo kuudentoista vuotiaana oli Risto kulkenut Suomenmaan päästä päähän, ristiin rastiin, sekä kesäaikoina vaeltanut Aunuksessa ja Vironmaalla karjan paimenena ja kuin muutenkin näissä maissa leipäsakset saivat paremman kaupan kuin kotimaassa, jossa leivästä oli suuri puute,

"kun sota riehui raivossa ja halla poltti peltoja".

Näillä Aunus ja Viroretkillänsä oli Risto oppinut venäjää, kuten hän itse kerskaili. Samoin kerskaili hän osaavansa ruotsiakin, jota oli oppinut Uudellamaalla ja eteläisellä Pohjanmaalla matkustellessaan.
