Talkoiden pitäminen on jokseenkin tavallista kaikkialla maassamme. Varsin usein pidetään näitä työjuhlia Itä Suomessa, sillä ne ovat Karjalan kansan hilpeän ja auttavaisen luonteen mukaisia. Jos ken tahtoo jonkun työn pikaisesti tehdyksi, niin on parasta pitää talkoot. Naapurit ja kyläläiset kutsutaan työhön, ruokaa ja juomaa annetaan yllin kyllin, mutta ei mitään palkkaa. Talkoilla sopii teettää melkein mitä työtä hyvänsä, mutta tavallisimmat kaikista ovat viljan leikkuutalkoot. Hyväonniset uskaltavat toki pitää heinätalkoitakin, kun sitävastoin kovaonniset älkööt yrittäkökään, heidän luokonsa sade turmelee, ja niin tulee "langon heiniä" enemmän kuin tarpeeksi.

Salmelan varakas talo on sen ihanan salmen rannalla, mikä yhdistää Kukkaropohjan lahden Suurselän järveen. Ikivanhoista ajoista on Salmisen suku siinä asunut, ja onpa siitä suvusta muutamia herraspoluillekin joutunut nimellä Sallmén.

Salmelan talon nykyinen isäntä, Antti Salminen, tahtoi koetella heinänteko onneansa. Urakkamiehillä oli hän niitättänyt Takamaan suuren niityn. Satoja kuormia oli heinää hajallaan luokona.
