Book cover

Samuel Johnson by Leslie Stephen is a compelling biography that delves into the life and mind of one of the most influential literary figures of the 18th century. In this deeply researched account, Stephen presents a comprehensive exploration of Johnson's journey, from his humble beginnings to his rise as a renowned writer, lexicographer, and critic.

The book skillfully captures the essence of Johnson's complex personality, portraying him as a man who was both brilliant and flawed. Stephen explores Johnson's struggles with poverty, physical ailments, and inner demons, allowing us to understand the profound impact these challenges had on his work. Through meticulous examination of Johnson's numerous writings, including his iconic dictionary, the author provides valuable insights into his thoughts, ideas, and unique literary style.

Stephen's writing style is engaging and accessible, making the book an enjoyable read for both scholarly readers and general enthusiasts of literature. His attention to detail and his ability to contextualize Johnson's work within the social and intellectual climate of his time is truly commendable. By vividly describing the literary salons, coffeehouses, and publishing houses of 18th century London, Stephen brings to life the world that influenced Johnson and shaped his literary career.

One of the book's strengths lies in the way it highlights Johnson's impact on English society. Stephen goes beyond Johnson's literary achievements and explores his contributions to political and social debates of the time, such as his strong stance against slavery and his support for the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. By examining Johnson's views on these important issues, the author paints a more holistic portrait of the man behind the words.

However, the book does have some minor drawbacks. At times, the excessive detail in Stephen's narrative can feel overwhelming, making it difficult to maintain focus. Additionally, while Stephen acknowledges Johnson's flaws, some readers may find the author too sympathetic towards his subject, occasionally bordering on hagiography.

Despite these minor shortcomings, Samuel Johnson by Leslie Stephen remains a significant contribution to the field of literary biography. With its extensive research, engaging writing style, and profound insights into Johnson's life and works, this book is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in understanding the profound influence of Samuel Johnson on English literature and culture.

He reconciled himself with difficulty to taking the oaths against the exiled dynasty. He was a man of considerable mental and physical power, but tormented by hypochondriacal tendencies. His son inherited a share both of his constitution and of his principles. Long afterwards Samuel associated with his childish days a faint but solemn recollection of a lady in diamonds and long black hood... Continue reading book >>
