Book cover

In "The Skipper and the Skipped: Being the Shore Log of Cap'n Aaron Sproul," author Holman Day takes readers on a captivating journey through the hardships and triumphs of seafaring life. Set in a coastal town in Maine, the novel follows the eventful life of Cap'n Aaron Sproul, a seasoned shipmaster whose experiences at sea shape his character in profound ways.

One of the major highlights of the book is Day's remarkable ability to bring the sea and its creatures to life through vivid descriptions. From the salty breeze that fills the air to the crashing waves against the rugged coastline, readers are immediately transported to the maritime world. Day effortlessly captures the essence of life at sea, revealing its allure and treacherous nature in equal measure.

The characterization in the book is also noteworthy. Cap'n Aaron Sproul emerges as a complex and well-developed protagonist, whose unfailing responsibility and determination make him a figure to admire. As the narrative progresses, readers witness his transformation from an ambitious young sailor to a wise captain, navigating both the relentless ocean and the intricacies of human relationships.

Day pays careful attention to the interactions between the seafarers, painting a rich portrait of camaraderie and mutual respect that develops among the crew members. These relationships, both aboard the ship and onshore, offer a glimpse into the unique bonds that form between those who share the dangers and triumphs of a life at sea.

Furthermore, the novel provides a deeper exploration of the mysteries of the ocean. Cap'n Sproul encounters encounters with various sea creatures, including a highly intelligent dolphin and a colossal whale, sparking curiosity and wonder in readers. Through these encounters, Day conveys the vastness and grandeur of the ocean, as well as the harmony that can exist between humans and the natural world.

One area that may be a potential drawback for some readers is the heavy use of nautical jargon throughout the book. While this lends authenticity to the narrative, it may present a barrier for those unfamiliar with the seafaring terminology. Nevertheless, the riveting plot and compelling characters are enough to draw readers in, even if they initially struggle with these technical aspects.

"The Skipper and the Skipped" is a captivating tale that beautifully captures the spirit and challenges of a life lived at sea. Holman Day's impressive writing style, coupled with his intricate characterization and attention to detail, make this book a must-read for those who appreciate historical fiction and the wonders of the maritime world.

Cap'n Aaron Sproul, late skipper of the Jefferson P. Benn , sat by the bedside of his uncle, "One arm" Jerry, and gazed into the latter's dimming eyes.
