In den ersten Maitagen hat die »Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung« den Abdruck meines, im vorigen Jahre geschriebenen Romans begonnen. Als es Hochsommer war, kam die österreichische Note an Serbien, die Mobilmachung Rußlands und an dem denkwürdigen vorletzten Julitag die Erklärung des Kriegszustandes für das deutsche Reichsgebiet. Seitdem hat sich in all seiner großartigen Wucht das gewaltige Drama verwirklicht, der europäische Krieg, dessen Nahen die »Sturmzeichen« ankündigten. Aus der deutsch russischen Spannung, die die Volkskämpfe am Balkan hervorriefen, ist die Idee meines Romans geboren.
