Suppression of the African Slave Trade to the United States of America, Volume 1

Book cover
By: (1868-1963)

Du Bois's thorough examination of the suppression of the African slave trade to the United States is a compelling and detailed account of a dark chapter in American history. The author leaves no stone unturned as he delves into the reasons behind the trade, the methods used to suppress it, and the impact it had on both the enslaved individuals and the country as a whole.

One of the most striking aspects of Du Bois's work is his ability to humanize the individuals involved in the slave trade, both the victims and the perpetrators. Through his meticulous research and attention to detail, he brings to light the true horrors and injustices faced by those who were forcibly brought to America as slaves.

Additionally, Du Bois sheds light on the various laws and policies that were implemented in an attempt to suppress the slave trade, highlighting the complexities and contradictions within the American legal system at the time. His analysis of the economic motivations behind these policies adds an additional layer of insight into the forces at play during this period.

Overall, Du Bois's work is an essential read for anyone interested in American history, particularly the history of slavery and the African slave trade. His writing is both engaging and informative, making his book a valuable resource for scholars and laypeople alike.

Book Description:
The question of the suppression of the slave-trade is so intimately connected with the questions as to its rise, the system of American slavery, and the whole colonial policy of the eighteenth century, that it is difficult to isolate it, and at the same time to avoid superficiality on the one hand, and unscientific narrowness of view on the other. While I could not hope entirely to overcome such a difficulty, I nevertheless trust that I have succeeded in rendering this monograph a small contribution to the scientific study of slavery and the American Negro.
