Thirty Years in the Itinerancy   By:

Book cover

Thirty Years in the Itinerancy is an insightful memoir written by Wesson Gage Miller, chronicling his experiences working as an itinerant preacher for three decades. This engaging book offers readers a unique glimpse into the life and challenges faced by a dedicated servant of God.

The author's writing style is simple and direct, making it easy for readers to connect with his story. Each chapter is filled with personal anecdotes, reflecting upon the trials, triumphs, and lessons learned during Miller's extensive career. His candidness and vulnerability shine through as he shares both the joys and sorrows he encountered on his journey.

What sets this memoir apart is Miller's ability to not only depict moments of spiritual transcendence, but also his willingness to discuss his doubts and internal conflicts. This level of honesty humanizes the author, allowing readers to relate to his internal struggles. Whether wrestling with his faith or questioning his purpose, Miller's narrative serves as a reminder that we all face periods of uncertainty, even those committed to a life of service.

Furthermore, the author's attention to detail is commendable. From the vivid descriptions of the communities he visited, to the intricate portraits he paints of the individuals he encountered, Miller succeeds in creating a rich tapestry of his experiences. Through his words, readers can practically smell the musty hymnals in the churches he preached in and feel the warmth of the handshakes from grateful congregants.

Another strength of this memoir is its exploration of the social and historical landscape of the time. Miller provides valuable insights into the challenges and changes the country faced during his itinerant ministry. From the impact of the industrial revolution to the aftermath of the Civil War, these broader societal forces serve as a backdrop against which Miller's personal journey unfolds.

While the book offers much to admire, there are a few minor drawbacks. At times, the narrative can feel slightly disjointed, jumping between different places and moments in time without a clear transition. In addition, a more thorough exploration of specific theological questions raised by the author could have added depth to the narrative.

That being said, Thirty Years in the Itinerancy is a captivating and thought-provoking memoir that will fascinate readers interested in history, spirituality, and personal growth. Wesson Gage Miller's raw and honest account of his life as an itinerant preacher is a testament to the transformative power of dedication, self-reflection, and faith.

THIRTY YEARS

IN THE

ITINERANCY,

BY

REV. W.G. MILLER, D.D.

DEDICATION.

TO THE MINISTERS AND LAYMEN OF THE WISCONSIN CONFERENCE, WITH WHOM THE AUTHOR HAS BEEN ASSOCIATED IN CHRISTIAN LABOR DURING THE PAST THIRTY YEARS ARE THESE PAGES RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED.

PREFACE.

The following pages were prepared in the midst of the taxing labors of the Ministerial calling. The materials have been drawn from a multitude of sources, and, though the recollections of individuals have not been entirely harmonious in all cases, the facts and dates are believed to be mainly reliable. The general plan, it will be observed, contemplates a brief record of the Charges and Ministers of the Wisconsin Conference, rather than furnish a sketch of my own services. To place the data, however, in suitable relations, and render it acceptable to the general reader, it has been deemed advisable to let the record follow the line of my labors during the thirty years of my Itinerant life. The publication of the book at the present time, is the result of my severe illness during the past year, and the generous, appreciative action taken by the District Conferences. A record of many other Charges and Ministers had been prepared, but, to my regret, the limits of the volume would not permit its insertion... Continue reading book >>
