EM S. MIGUEL DE SEIDE

Eram onze horas da manhã. Acabava, na egreja de Santo Thyrso, a missa do dia . Para o largo do mosteiro vinham sahindo os ranchos dos homens e das mulheres do campo; algumas senhoras, poucas. A manhã tinha estado fresca, segundo me disseram, mas eu perdi a manhã, pela simples razão de ter perdido a noite no arraial da Senhora das Dôres, na Trofa, aonde condescendentemente me deixei arrastar. Quando sahi de casa, seguido pelo criado que levava de redea a garrana, o sol descobria. A consciencia de não ter nascido fadado para cavallarias altas, obrigou me a ir a pé até um sitio que julguei propicio para me lançar a cima do sellim sem grande concurso de publico.

O criado dizia me que não conhecia besta melhor do que a garrana.

Muito fiel! accrescentava elle, inspirando me confiança, e descendo os estribos.

Para além da ponte, cavalguei.
