Au lieu de tableaux, un vieux patricien fort riche et fort avare me fit offrir vendre, et trs cher, de vieux manuscrits jaunis par le temps; je demandai les parcourir; il y consentit, ajoutant qu'il se fiait ma probit, pour ne pas me souvenir des anecdotes piquantes que j'aurais lues, si je n'achetais pas les manuscrits. Sous cette condition, qui me plut, j'ai parcouru, au grand dtriment de mes yeux, trois ou quatre cents volumes o furent entasss, il y a deux ou trois sicles, des rcits d'aventures tragiques, des lettres de dfi relatives des duels, des traits de pacification entre des nobles voisins, des mmoires sur toutes sortes de sujets, etc., etc. Le vieux propritaire demandait un prix norme de ces manuscrits.
