The Oregon Trail

The Oregon Trail by Francis Parkman, Jr.
By:

The Oregon Trail by Francis Parkman, Jr. is a classic piece of American literature that provides a detailed account of the author’s journey along the Oregon Trail in the mid-19th century. Parkman’s writing style is rich and descriptive, painting a vivid picture of the rugged landscapes, harsh conditions, and diverse characters he encountered on his expedition.

One of the standout features of The Oregon Trail is Parkman’s keen eye for detail and his ability to capture the essence of the American frontier at a time when it was still largely uncharted territory. His observations about the Native American tribes he encountered, as well as the interactions between different groups of pioneers, offer valuable insights into the cultural and social dynamics of the period.

However, some readers may find Parkman’s writing style to be dense and archaic, which could make it a challenging read for those who are not accustomed to older works of literature. Additionally, the author’s perspective as a white man exploring Native American lands may be seen as biased or limited in today’s more culturally sensitive climate.

Overall, The Oregon Trail is a fascinating and important work that offers a unique glimpse into the history of westward expansion in America. Parkman’s detailed account of his journey serves as a valuable resource for those interested in the exploration and settlement of the American West.

Book Description:

The book is a breezy, first-person account of a 2 month summer tour of the U.S. states of Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, and Kansas when Parkman was 23.

Proofed and produced by Karen Merline.
