Ranald Bannerman's Boyhood

Ranald Bannerman's Boyhood by George MacDonald
By: (1824-1905)

Ranald Bannerman's Boyhood is a delightful story that follows the adventures of a young boy named Ranald as he grows up in a small village in Scotland. The author, George MacDonald, does a fantastic job of capturing the innocence and wonder of childhood, while also exploring deeper themes of friendship, family, and growing up.

The characters in the book are richly drawn and feel incredibly real, from Ranald's mischievous best friend Hughie to the wise and kind old minister Mr. Dishart. MacDonald's writing is beautiful and evocative, transporting the reader to the rugged Scottish landscape and immersing them in Ranald's world.

One of the most compelling aspects of the book is the way in which MacDonald explores complex moral and spiritual themes through the eyes of a child. Ranald grapples with questions of right and wrong, forgiveness, and the nature of God in a way that is both poignant and thought-provoking.

Overall, Ranald Bannerman's Boyhood is a timeless coming-of-age story that will resonate with readers of all ages. George MacDonald's mastery of storytelling and his deep understanding of the human experience shine through in this captivating and heartfelt novel.

Book Description:

George MacDonald is mainly known for his fantasy works and fairy tales such as At the Back of the North Wind and The Princess and the Goblin. However, during his life he was more famous for many more realistic novels. . . among them the somewhat autobiographical Ranald Bannerman’s Boyhood.

This story of a young motherless boy growing up with his brothers in a Scottish manse is full of delightful characters. There is Kirsty, an enchanting Highland storyteller, Turkey, the intrepid cowherd, the evil Kelpie, and the lovely Elsie Duff. Throughout the twists and turns of his escapades and adventures Ranald learns from his father the important lessons of courage and integrity.

When Ranald Bannerman’s Boyhood came out in 1871 the New York Independent praised it as “full of sweetness, full of boy-life and true goodness”. Perhaps, but it is also a good story, from the master of storytellers.
