The Superstition of Divorce

The Superstition of Divorce by Chesterton, G. K.
By:

In "The Superstition of Divorce," G. K. Chesterton offers a thought-provoking critique of the modern perception of divorce. Through his insightful analysis, Chesterton argues that divorce is often viewed as a solution to marital problems without considering the long-term consequences and impact on society.

Chesterton argues that the belief in divorce as a quick fix for unhappy marriages is a dangerous superstition that ultimately undermines the sanctity of marriage and family life. He contends that the emphasis on personal happiness and individual rights has led to a disposable attitude towards marriage, resulting in a breakdown of traditional values and societal cohesion.

Chesterton's writing is sharp and persuasive, challenging readers to reconsider their views on divorce and its effects on individuals and society as a whole. While some may find his arguments conservative or old-fashioned, his insights are relevant and thought-provoking in today's society, where divorce rates continue to rise and the institution of marriage is increasingly devalued.

Overall, "The Superstition of Divorce" is a compelling read that encourages readers to reflect on the true meaning and significance of marriage in a world where divorce has become all too common. Chesterton's powerful argument against the superficial and harmful belief in divorce as a solution is a timely reminder of the importance of upholding the sanctity of marriage and its role in promoting stable families and strong communities.

Book Description:

This short book was written in 1920, and in it Chesterton, with his usual wit and incisive logic, presents a series of articles defending marriage and indicating the weaknesses in divorce. He did this 16 year before the first Christian denomination in the world allowed it’s members to divorce. Till then Christendom was unanimous in standing against it. Chesterton saw clearly the trends of this time, and delivered this defense.
