On verra, par la lecture de l'avertissement de l'auteur, que je pourrais tirer quelque vanité de ce que ses intentions ont été remplies relativement à la publication de ses Mémoires. Le choix qui a été fait de moi pour éditeur, ne l'a point été dans des vues intéressées; et moi même j'y ai apporté, j'ose dire, le même désintéressement. Tout autre aurait brigué une telle publication, et n'y aurait vu que la source d'un gain peut être imaginaire. Pour moi, je n'y ai vu qu'un devoir, et je l'ai rempli, mais non pas sans hésitation. J'avoue même que dans ma détermination j'ai eu besoin d'être éclairé. Le titre du livre et les sujets qu'il traite, me paraissaient peu propres à me tranquilliser. J'ai voulu être sûr de ne blesser ni les lois, ni les convenances, ni le gouvernement de mon pays. N'osant m'en rapporter à moi même, j'ai consulté un homme exercé, et il m'a rassuré complètement.
