漱石の熊本時代の体験を元にした小説。主人公の画家は峠を歩いて越えて、山中のひなびた温泉、那古井を訪ねる。そこには温泉宿がひとつあり、客は主人公だけであった。非人情の旅である。宿のお嬢さん、那美さんに色々と驚かされる。最後は那美さんらと共に、川舟に乗って、那美さんのいとこの久一さんの出征の見送りに、駅まで行く。そして、探し求めた画になる那美さんの表情を見つける。
