Oliver Twist (version 6)

Book cover
By: (1812-1870)

"Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens is a timeless classic that tells the story of a young orphan's journey through the harsh realities of 19th century London. The novel is filled with vivid descriptions of both the bustling city and the colorful characters that inhabit it.

Dickens masterfully weaves a tale of poverty, crime, and redemption, showcasing the stark divide between the wealthy and the destitute. Oliver's innocence and goodness serve as a stark contrast to the corruption and greed that surrounds him, making him a sympathetic and endearing protagonist.

The characters in the novel are richly drawn and complex, from the loathsome Fagin and Bill Sikes to the kind-hearted Mr. Brownlow and Nancy. Each character adds depth and nuance to the story, creating a compelling narrative that keeps readers engaged from start to finish.

Overall, "Oliver Twist" is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that delves into themes of poverty, morality, and social injustice. Dickens' sharp wit and keen observations make this a must-read for anyone interested in classic literature.

Book Description:
"Please sir, I want some more," the famous line spoken by Oliver Twist at age nine, becomes the tipping point of a huge change in Oliver's life. He is soon captured into the service of Fagin and his gang of pick-pocketing boys. But, Mr. Brownlow saves him from arrest, and for the first time in his young life Oliver finds comfort and caring. Unfortunately, he is recaptured into the seedy and disgusting world he had escaped, and meets with Bill Sykes, a dangerous criminal. There are numerous delightful or wicked characters that carry the story along, such as the Artful Dodger-- a boy of the streets under Fagin, Mr. Bumble the Beadle, looking for ways to get rid of Oliver, Nancy who makes a fateful betrayal, and the Maylies, whose affection Oliver craves. The author's descriptions of the back street life in London, bring us full force into the crushing poverty and the terrible way in which poor people were treated during that time. Charles Dickens wrote Oliver Twist as a serial in 1837, and it is considered one of the most popular in English literature. - Summary by Mil Nicholson

Subject: Absolutely wonderful
Do not listen to the reviewer "April," as you can listen to the first chapter and instantly note the narrator is superb. An amazing story and how the narrator keeps the voices straight and without pause is simply nothing less than amazing.

The voices of the narrator were mostly awful, especially the women's voices... and he reads too slow so it takes far longer than it should to finish the book.
